What is a Digital Compositor?

A digital compositor is a skilled artist in the realm of visual effects (VFX), responsible for seamlessly combining multiple visual elements into a single, cohesive final image. This process, known as compositing, involves the integration of 2D and 3D assets, live-action footage, and computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create scenes that appear as if they were captured in-camera. Compositors work with layers of images and elements, meticulously blending them to ensure that the final result is visually convincing and aligns with the director's vision.

In the world of 2D compositing, artists often work with flat images and video layers, using techniques such as color grading to match the color balance and mood of different shots. They also employ greenscreen keying to isolate actors or objects from their backgrounds, allowing them to be placed into entirely new environments. These elements are combined with mattes, masks, and rotoscoping to create complex visual effects. On the other hand, 3D compositing involves integrating 3D models and animations with live-action footage. This process requires an understanding of depth, lighting, and perspective to ensure that the 3D elements blend seamlessly with the 2D background.

Advanced compositing techniques include seamless set extensions, where the physical set is digitally expanded to create larger or more intricate environments. Digital doubles are also used to replace actors with CGI counterparts for stunts or scenes that are too dangerous or impossible to film in real life. The goal of a digital compositor is to create a final image that is indistinguishable from reality, enhancing the storytelling and visual experience of films, TV shows, and commercials. By mastering these techniques, compositors play a crucial role in bringing imaginative worlds to life on screen.

The Instructor

This website was founded by Alex Hanneman, a Senior Compositor with nearly 10 years of experience working at the top VFX Studios globally.

Alex's goal is to make the process of becoming a pro-level artist a much easier process - by streamlining information in a cohesive program, without breaking the bank.

How long are the courses?

The courses on this website vary in length, and can be found in their descriptions.

Our courses are typically longer - building up the fundamentals, in a very specific learning order. Our approach is unique to Compositing Academy which is what makes our program unique and has helped many VFX Artists succeed with their goals.

Our workshops are shorter than courses - and generally focus on a few adjacent or creative concepts that aren't part of the "main training program" that we offer.

Can I use the assets in my reel?

Absolutely. The only thing we ask is that you credit Compositing Academy, if you use our CG renders or footage, or just found our information useful! Your support makes this website possible!

Some projects are meant to be practice projects - so the scripts are already given. In this case, it is not meant for a demo reel shot. Later on in the program - you are not given the full script for certain shots, which are meant to be completed 100% by you - for your demoreel.

This ensures everyone actually does the work required in the shots and doesn't copy the instructor's script.

Various templates or examples will still be given so you have a clear guide to follow.

Where are the classes hosted?

There is an online portal once you’ve purchased any course, where you can ask questions and access the lectures, project files, etc.
